Eirene Constantinou (b.1991) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Cyprus. She holds a BA/MA in Fine and Applied Arts from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and her current work evolves around the crossing between visual art forms. Recent projects include her light installation ‘Sense of Sight’ (EFE 1st Int. Installation Art Festival, Cyprus), her participation with ATAXIA ‘Similar Differences – Different Similarities’ (1st Biennale Larnaca) and the opening of EVOHK artist-run space.
My work is process-led, I use natural and artificial lighting as well as digital photography manipulation to juxtapose elements from painting, sculpture, photography and installation. This process produces time-based media to be placed into and around specific spaces leading to a sensory experience, obscuring the boundaries between reality and fantasy. The use of light as an artistic medium, eventually acquires mass and function of a physical object, creating movement and plasticity to space. It’s elusive quality reveals an illusory dimension in which time visually shapes its own environment. This sense of space, external as well as internal would have otherwise been impossible to exist.
In my light installations, I often contemplate on the concepts of change and transience; infinity in a simulated space is an idea that you can only suggest. My work is influenced by the curiosity to understand how people see, hear, imagine, think, learn, and act in relation to their perception of art. The study of subjective and sensori-emotional values, or sometimes called judgments of sentiment and taste is part of my main research interests which drives me to evoke personal and collective memories by re-constructing their fleeting magic, exceeding spatial and temporal boundaries.
