Eγκράτεια Ρούμπου – Egkrateia Roumpou

Η Εγκράτεια Ρούμπου, εικαστικός, γεννήθηκε στη Θεσσαλονίκη, όπου ζει και εργάζεται. Αποφοίτησε το 2004 με άριστα από Τμήμα Εικαστικών και Εφαρμοσμένων Τεχνών της Σχολής Καλών Τεχνών του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης. Ακολούθησε μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές επιπέδου ΜΑ Fine Art στο University of Arts, Wimbledon, στο Λονδίνο, απ’ όπου αποφοίτησε το 2007. Έχει πραγματοποιήσει τρεις ατομικές εκθέσεις και έχει συμμετάσχει σε πολλές ομαδικές στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό, και μεταξύ αυτών, Dreams and Fragments, Lola Nikolaou Gallery, Θεσσαλονίκη, 98 hours, Stereosis, Θεσσαλονίκη, On books με την ομάδα Platform Translation 98 weeks, Θεσσαλονίκη Biennale: 3 και Βηρυτός, Currents, Trinity Buoy Wharf, Deutsche Post Bank, Λονδίνο. Από το 2009 διδάσκει εικαστικά στο Αμερικάνικο Κολλέγιο ANATOLIA.

Για την Εγκράτεια Ρούμπου, πρόκειται για ένα ταξίδι αναζήτησης. Αυτογνωσία ή κάθαρση, η κόλαση του Δάντη? Μια διαδρομή δύσκολη, όπου οι λέξεις και οι εικόνες καλούν το θεατή σε επαναλαμβανόμενη φυγή. Δημιουργούν ρωγμές. Γεννούν την ανάγκη να βυθιστεί, πέρα από την επιφάνεια. Διεργασίες επίπονες, που η ίδια η καλλιτέχνις ονομάζει εσωτερική βύθιση. Αυτές οι διαδρομές, αυτή η αναζήτηση καταγράφονται με εικόνες, με λέξεις, με χρώμα και σημάδια στη ζωγραφική επιφάνεια. Σκέψεις, συναισθήματα και βιώματα, που προκαλούν το βλέμμα του θεατή ως μια ένδειξη των πολύπλοκων συνδέσεων του υποκειμένου με το αντικείμενο, του θεατή με τη ζωγραφική. Οι άλλοι κι εγώ σε μια συνύπαρξη εικαστική. Σε μια διαδικασία διαλογισμού και λύτρωσης, ένας εικαστικός εξαγνισμός.

Egkrateia Roumpou, visual artist, was born, lives and works in Thessaloniki, Greece. She graduated in 2004 with distinction from the Department of Visual Arts of the School of Fine Arts – Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She followed postgraduate studies ΜΑ Fine Art at University of Arts, Wimbledon, London, from where she graduated in 2007. She presented tree solo shows, and took part in several group shows in Greece and abroad, among them Dreams and Fragments, 2017, Lola Nikolaou Gallery, Thessaloniki, 98 hours, 2016, Stereosis, Thessaloniki, On books with the group Platform Translation 98 weeks, 2011, Thessaloniki Biennale: 3 and Beirut, Currents, Trinity Buoy Wharf, 2007, Deutsche Post Bank, Λονδίνο. Since 2009 she is a teacher of visual arts in ANATOLIA College, Thessaloniki, Greece.

As for Roumpou, this is all about a journey of pursuit, self-awareness, catharsis, Dante’s inferno? A painful route, where the words and images, invite the viewer in a repetitive escape. They create breaches. They give birth to the need to immerse under the surface. Strenuous processes, which the artist calls internal immersion.

These journeys, this quest are recorded with pictures, with words, with colour, and marks on the painting surface. Thoughts, emotions, and experiences, challenge the gaze of the viewer as an indication of the complexity of tensions connecting the subject with the object, the viewer with the painting. The others and myself in a visual co-existence. In a procedure of meditation and salvation, purification through painting.
